Taking full advantage, the Romans and Carthaginians benefitted from a flourishing trade in the island's oil and the Spanish introduced new grafting techniques and decreed that each citizen must graft at least 10 wild olive trees each year. The House of Savoy kings required landowners to plant olive trees on their boundaries and to cultivate any wild trees on their property.
Now, Sardinian's reap the rewards of their past and many credit their good health and high life expectancy to the quality of their olive oil. The olive harvest in Autumn remains a focus of Sardinian rural life.
